임종엽 작가가 오는 9월 9일부터 16일까지 오스트리아 클로스터노이부르크의 갤러리 크라니스테르(Galerie Kranister)에서 열리는 2026 오스트리아 그룹전 《UNIVERSE》에 참가한다.

《UNIVERSE》는 ‘Every Artist Creates a World(모든 작가는 하나의 세계를 창조한다)’와 ‘한 명의 작가, 하나의 우주’를 주제로 마련된다. 서로 다른 시선과 조형언어를 지닌 작가들이 각자의 작품 세계를 하나의 독립된 우주처럼 펼쳐 보이는 자리다. 전시는 소피 박 아트 프로젝트(Sophie Park Art Project)가 주최하고 토메이 트래블(Tomay Travel)이 기획한다. 개막식은 현지 시각으로 9월 9일 오후 6시에 열린다.

임종엽은 이번 전시에서 푸른색을 중심으로 자연의 생명력과 인간의 내면, 생성과 소멸의 순환을 탐구해 온 ‘SHH’ 연작을 선보인다. 화면을 지배하는 깊고 강렬한 청색과 중앙을 가르거나 밀고 나오는 균열, 그 틈에서 드러나는 흰색의 흔적은 고요와 움직임, 충만과 비움이 공존하는 긴장감을 형성한다.

 

작가에게 자연은 눈앞에 놓인 풍경에 머물지 않는다. 자연은 끊임없이 움직이고 변화하며 새로운 생명을 만들어 내는 근원적 에너지다. 임종엽은 이러한 힘을 특정한 사물이나 풍경의 재현이 아닌 색과 물성, 화면의 갈라짐과 중첩으로 시각화한다.

‘SHH’라는 명칭은 침묵과 고요를 떠올리게 하지만 작품의 내부에는 강한 운동성과 생명력이 흐른다. 넓게 펼쳐진 청색의 표면은 무한한 공간이나 심해, 태초의 우주를 연상시키고, 화면을 뚫고 나타난 형상은 씨앗이 발아하거나 생명이 껍질을 깨고 나오는 순간처럼 다가온다.

 

작품은 완결된 이미지로 고정되기보다 관람자의 시선과 감각에 따라 끊임없이 변화한다. 관람자가 화면의 틈과 색채, 표면의 미세한 흔적을 따라가면서 자신만의 기억과 감정을 투영할 때 작품은 비로소 새로운 생명력을 얻는다. 작가가 만들어 놓은 조형적 공간에 관람자의 경험이 더해지며 ‘살아 있는 그림’이 완성되는 셈이다.

특히 푸른색은 임종엽의 작품에서 단순한 배경색이 아니다. 그것은 생명의 근원이자 정신적인 공간이며, 현실과 비현실, 의식과 무의식의 경계를 잇는 통로로 기능한다. 푸른 화면을 가르는 흰빛은 어둠 속에서 움트는 생명의 징후이자, 닫힌 세계를 열어젖히는 희망의 틈으로 읽힌다.

임종엽 작가

1999년 나무갤러리에서 첫 개인전 《달을 갉아 먹은 목어》를 연 임종엽은 지금까지 34회의 개인전과 265회의 단체전에 참여했다. 갤러리 다움, IACO 갤러리, 싱가포르 IMA 갤러리, 미래에셋, 아트핀갤러리, 컬피뮤지엄, 너븐나루갤러리, 갤러리MOM, 미국 코네티컷대학교 UCONN 갤러리 등 국내외 여러 공간에서 작품을 선보였다.

 

또한 우제길미술관, 사천문화예술회관, 함양문화예술회관, 금보성아트센터, 영국 런던 ‘Battersea Autumn’, 대산미술관, 백공미술관, 나주미술관, 여수미술관, 거제 해금강테마박물관, 아시아호텔아트페어 서울 등 다양한 전시와 미술 행사에 참가하며 작품 세계를 확장해 왔다.

이번 오스트리아 전시는 오랜 시간 색채와 물성, 자연과 생명의 관계를 탐색해 온 임종엽의 조형언어를 유럽 관람객에게 소개하는 무대다. 각 작가의 세계를 하나의 우주로 바라보는 전시의 취지는 내면과 자연, 물질과 정신의 경계를 넘나드는 그의 작업과 맞닿아 있다.

임종엽의 푸른 화면은 무엇인가를 직접 설명하기보다 관람자가 스스로 감각하고 상상할 수 있는 공간을 내어준다. 고요한 청색의 심연과 그 틈에서 피어나는 빛은 생명이 어디에서 시작되고 어떻게 이어지는지를 묻는다. 그 질문 앞에서 관람자는 한 점의 그림을 넘어 또 하나의 우주와 마주하게 된다.

Artist Im Jongyeop to Join “UNIVERSE” Group Exhibition in Austria

Exploring vitality, emergence, and the cycles of nature through his intensely blue “SHH” series 

Exhibition runs from September 9 to 16 at Galerie Kranister in Klosterneuburg

 

Korean artist Im Jongyeop will participate in “UNIVERSE,” the 2026 Austria Group Exhibition, to be held from September 9 to 16 at Galerie Kranister in Klosterneuburg, Austria.

 

Under the themes “Every Artist Creates a World” and “One Artist, One Universe,” the exhibition brings together artists with distinct perspectives and visual languages. Each participating artist presents an individual artistic world as an independent universe.

 

The exhibition is organized by Sophie Park Art Project and curated by Tomay Travel. The opening reception will take place at 6 p.m. on September 9.

 

Im will present works from his “SHH” series, through which he has explored the vitality of nature, the human interior, and the continuous cycle of emergence and disappearance. Intense fields of blue dominate his canvases, while cracks, openings, layered surfaces, and traces of white create a sense of tension between stillness and movement, fullness and emptiness.

 

For Im, nature is more than a landscape visible to the eye. It is a fundamental energy that constantly moves, changes, and brings new life into being. Rather than depicting specific objects or scenery, he visualizes this force through color, materiality, ruptured surfaces, and accumulated layers.

 

Although the title “SHH” evokes silence and tranquility, powerful movement and vitality flow beneath the surface of the paintings. The expansive blue spaces recall the deep sea, infinity, or a primordial universe. Forms emerging through openings in the canvas resemble seeds beginning to germinate or living beings breaking through their shells.

 

The works do not remain fixed as fully resolved images. They continue to change according to the gaze, emotions, and memories of each viewer. As viewers follow the openings, colors, and subtle marks across the surface and project their own experiences onto them, the paintings acquire renewed vitality. In this sense, Im’s works become “living paintings” through the active participation of the audience.

 

Blue is not merely a background color in Im’s practice. It functions as a source of life, a spiritual field, and a passage connecting reality and unreality, consciousness and the unconscious. The white light revealed within the blue surface may be read as a sign of life emerging from darkness or as a hopeful opening into a previously enclosed world.

Im held his first solo exhibition, “The Moon-Gnawing Wooden Fish,” at Namoo Gallery in 1999. He has since presented 34 solo exhibitions and participated in 265 group exhibitions.

 

His works have been shown at Gallery DAOOM, IACO Gallery, IMA Gallery Singapore, Mirae Asset, Art Pin Gallery, Culppy Museum, Neobeun Naru Gallery, Gallery MOM, and the UCONN Gallery at the University of Connecticut, among many other venues.

 

He has also taken part in exhibitions and art events at the Woojegil Art Museum, Sacheon Culture and Arts Center, Hamyang Culture and Arts Center, Geumboseong Art Center, Battersea Autumn in London, Daesan Museum, Baekgong Museum, Naju Museum, Yeosu Museum, Geoje Haegeumgang Theme Museum, and the Asia Hotel Art Fair Seoul.

 

The Austrian exhibition will introduce European audiences to Im’s visual language, which has developed through his sustained exploration of color, materiality, nature, and life. The exhibition’s concept of regarding each artist’s world as a universe resonates closely with his practice, which moves across the boundaries between the inner self and nature, matter and spirit.

 

Rather than offering a direct explanation, Im’s blue canvases create spaces in which viewers may sense, imagine, and interpret freely. The deep silence of blue and the light emerging through its openings raise questions about where life begins and how it continues. Standing before these works, the viewer encounters not simply a painting, but another universe.
